It is sad when people only look and see the outside of a person. Making assumptions and judging them only by outward appearance; how they dress, by the car they drive, house they live in etc. …never bothering to look inside and see what is really there. What you see is not always what is …Stop and think before you open your mouth and comment, before you assume and before you judge. When you talk of what you do not know you just show your ignorance.
I was recently in Wal-Mart, which I rarely am, I am not a big fan of Wal-Mart. However, there I was buying a few things I needed, one in particular that I can never seem to find other places. Standing in the check out line an incident occurred between some people ahead of me that sparked me to write this post. I was not involved in the incident, however it hit me on a personal level.
I later was talking to some friends and one of them said he had experienced this on a personal level as well with his wife. He said he has seen the looks people give to her, the comments, as she has been judged because she is small & thin. She has tattoo’s ( some of which she did her self & that he finds beautiful ) & in the summer she dresses maybe a little on the light side. But hey, we are in Texas, it can get quite hot in the summer months. Some have went so far to whisper the word drug addict, thinking no one can here. Anyway they could not be further from the truth! Maybe if they looked closer, or even got to know that person they would see how wrong indeed. Maybe that person you see that drives that old car drives it not because they are poor, or trashy, or not successful … but simply because they may prefer to spend their money in another manner. Maybe that person that dresses different does so because they just don’t see the reason or importance in trendy fashion; spending money on a lot of clothes. And so what if they do dress different or drive an old car or their home is humble. To judge them on outward appearance maybe to never know a good person, a beautiful person from the inside out. My friend reminded me of a quote that is very fitting here. I am not sure who the author is but it goes like this …
“Contempt prior to investigation will leave you in ever lasting ignorance”
Just my stance for a Sunday afternoon.
